This week the <strong>Church of England<\/strong> proved it was more than a joke as they finally lost patience with the payday lenders that are seemingly running riot in the UK. The church decided that it would &#8216;<strong><a title=\"Damn you Wonga!\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/money\/2013\/jul\/25\/church-england-wonga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">compete Wonga out of existence<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;. The only downside to this was that one of the Churches many <a title=\"Ooops\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-23459932\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">investments from its \u00a35.5bn fund was actually in one of the parent companies of<strong> Wonga<\/strong><\/a>. Embarrassment aside it is good to see alternatives to banks and payday lenders, such as Credit Unions get some coverage. The<strong> FT<\/strong> also wrote a <a title=\"Invest all the holy money\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/75691f60-f621-11e2-a55d-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2aQ6w9SwF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nice piece on how they Church should fund a whole host of alternative lenders<\/a>. Talking of alternative lenders, the <strong><a title=\"Burnley Savings and Loans\" href=\"http:\/\/www.channel4.com\/programmes\/bank-of-dave\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bank of Dave<\/a><\/strong> seems to have had a great impact on the regulatory environment in the UK. A <a title=\"Dave to the rescue\" href=\"http:\/\/www.publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/jt201314\/jtselect\/jtpcbs\/27\/27iv29.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent report<\/a>\u00a0said that the programme showed that &#8216;many things need to change&#8217;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>10.7.The Bank\u2019s \u201cconsumers\u201d need to become \u201ccustomers\u201d again. Bank customers don\u2019t consume anything and they should not be (mis-)sold \u201cproducts\u201d. Banking is actually quite simple.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There was more <strong>bad news for payday lenders<\/strong> as <a title=\"Advertisers lose interest\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/uk-news\/2013\/jul\/23\/plymouth-council-bans-payday-loans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Plymouth Council<\/strong> banned providers from advertising on billboards and bus stops in the city<\/a>. Slightly better news for Wonga was that <strong>Newcastle United<\/strong> forward <a title=\"Ok boss I will wear it....\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/football\/2013\/jul\/25\/papiss-cisse-newcastle-wonga-row\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Papiss Cisse<\/strong> backed down from the moral high ground of refusing to wear their<strong> Wonga<\/strong> sponsored kit this season<\/a> on religious grounds (may have been something to do with him being <a title=\"Ooooops\" href=\"http:\/\/i.huffpost.com\/gen\/1258683\/thumbs\/o-PAPISS-CISSE-CASINO-570.jpg?6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">photographed in a casino<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Fraud, Security and wrongdoing news. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Oooooooopppsss\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2380232\/I-private-eye-spied-financiers-protected-police-Jailed-detective-breaks-silence-pressure-grows-investigate-companies-secret-list-given-MPs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A jailed detective has broken his silence<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>stealing confidential information for a number of financial services firms. Included in the package is the ability to <strong>create one time only credit card numbers<\/strong>, in light of the above story it is clear that credit card numbers as we know them today are not fit for purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Well known <strong>ATM hacker<\/strong>, <a title=\"Risky business\" href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-1009_3-57595776-83\/atm-hacker-barnaby-jack-dies\/?part=rss&amp;subj=news&amp;tag=title\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barnaby Jack, died unexpectedly at the age of 35<\/a> just as he was about to go on stage and demonstrate <strong>pacemaker hacking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For just <a title=\"Cheap Greek Horse for sale\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2013\/07\/25\/kins_banking_trojan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$5,000 you can buy your own bank raiding trojan<\/a>. Innovation opportunity for sure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PayPal<\/strong> have been hosting a series of hackdays leading up to a mega hack day in an event they are calling battle hack. The most recent event in NYC was won by <a title=\"Embed this coin inside this axe\" href=\"http:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2013\/07\/24\/augmented-reality-meets-payments-paypals-nyc-battle-hack-winners-puts-virtual-money-in-physical-objects\/?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>DropDeadAR<\/strong> who have built virtual money into actual physical objects and locations<\/a>. Winston will not be the face of the fiver but <a title=\"Jane won it!\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-23424289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it will actually be <strong>Jane Austen<\/strong><\/a> thanks to an impressive campaign lead by Caroline Criado-Perez. Unfortunately this campaign turned sour with <a title=\"Awful\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-23485610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caroline receiving awful abuse on Twitter<\/a>, which has thankfully lead to one arrest so far, this shows it was certainly worth fighting for and that there is much more work to be done. On a lighter note this article on the <a title=\"Design the paper money\" href=\"http:\/\/www.designweek.co.uk\/analysis\/how-to-design-banknotes\/3036409.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">design of banknotes<\/a> is a nice read.<\/p>\n<p>And finally an interesting video clip on the history of <a title=\"Video of the futre\" href=\"http:\/\/paleofuture.gizmodo.com\/internet-pioneers-discuss-the-future-of-money-books-a-880551175\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Fintech from way back in 1972<\/strong><\/a> in the very early stages of the computing age.
