A mobile wallet app that aims to get round the infrastructural challenges of POS terminals and wi-fi by communicating with other Clinkle devices via high frequency sound. Details are a bit thin on the ground at the moment though. The app has been built by folk at Stanford University and has raised a whopping $25 million in early investment. I can&#8217;t help thinking this company might end up being the <a title=\"Color of money (burning)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/color-shutdown-2012-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Color<\/a> of the fintech world. <a title=\"Uphill battle\" href=\"http:\/\/readwrite.com\/2013\/06\/28\/heres-a-heavy-dose-of-reality-for-new-mobile-payments-startup-clinkle?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter#awesm=~oai17ZjhMgf23i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">It will certainly be very tough for them.<\/a>\u00a0The Next Web wrote about the <a title=\"Roundup inside a roundup\" href=\"http:\/\/thenextweb.com\/eu\/2013\/06\/30\/whats-happening-with-wallet-solutions-around-northern-europe\/?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">current state of mobile wallets in Europe<\/a>\u00a0in what is becoming a very crowded market..<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Square<\/strong> teased that they were launching in a new market, making me hopeful it was the UK. It was all a ruse however and they actually <a title=\"zzzzzzz\" href=\"https:\/\/squareup.com\/register\/sell-online\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">launched an actual market<\/a>. Allowing merchants to build an online store, lowering the barrier to entry to online sales for the small merchants that are the typical Square card processing users. <a title=\"Wired review Market\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/business\/2013\/06\/squares-new-online-stores-could-make-twitter-the-next-place-you-shop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wired speculated that it might integrate well with the new Twitter cards<\/a>, Intriguing. Not all good news for Square though as one new thing opened, <a title=\"closed shop\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/06\/27\/square-giftcards-idUSL2N0F323720130627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">their gift card service closed<\/a> down.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mobile Point of Sale terminals, the market that Square kickstarted, is hotting up in the UK. <a title=\"WorldPay Zinc\" href=\"http:\/\/www.finextra.com\/news\/fullstory.aspx?newsitemid=24964\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>John Lewis<\/strong> will soon be selling WorldPay Zinc MPOS terminals for \u00a360<\/a>. <a title=\"Lloyds and Monitise\" href=\"http:\/\/www.finextra.com\/news\/fullstory.aspx?newsitemid=24956&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lloyds<\/strong> have also announced they are working with <strong>Monitise<\/strong><\/a> on their white label MPOS system.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mastercard<\/strong> launched <a title=\"Simplify\" href=\"https:\/\/www.simplify.com\/commerce\/?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Simplify<\/a>, their new set of APIs for making it easy to add payments to apps and web services. Some commentators have noted that is a straight copy of Stripe and that the name is very close to Bank Simple. The scrappy start ups are clearly having an impact on the incumbents.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Barclays<\/strong> made some changes to their terms of service that indicate they are to <a title=\"Sell, sell, sell\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/newsbysector\/banksandfinance\/10137785\/Barclays-to-sell-on-data-from-savers-and-track-mobile-phones.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">start selling customer data to third parties and track mobile phone location data<\/a>. \u00a0It will be interesting to see customer reaction to that change. In less controversial news they also launch a lovely new feature in their mobile banking app that lets you <a title=\"Straight through\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rLXFq843nS0&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;utm_content=bufferc9797&amp;utm_source=buffer&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=Buffer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">call them directly from the app and avoid the automated system and get straight through to a human as your are validated<\/a>. Slick.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Zip Zapp\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/business\/news\/vocalink-develops-mobile-payments-app-zapp-8672368.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Vocalink<\/strong> announced a new merchant targeted mobile payment initiative called <strong>Zapp<\/strong><\/a>, not to be confused with the <a title=\"Zzap 64\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zzap64.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">classic games magazine<\/a>. A man was charged with trying to <a title=\"CryptoExtort\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2013\/06\/michael-mancil-brown-indicted-fraud-extortion-93487.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">extort $1 million in Bitcoins from Mitt Romney<\/a>, This <a title=\"MicroBit\" href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/mailarchive\/forum.php?thread_name=44f8fd60-be4a-436d-a132-422b939d6de1%40email.android.com&amp;forum_name=bitcoin-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">micropayments add on to Bitcoin<\/a> looks interesting and is another example of the fact we still on&#8217;t know what Bitcoin can become.
